It was aimed at protecting Native Americans from the brutality of the police, it was modelled on the Black Panthers.

Explanation:

The AIM was founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the only city with a significant number of Native Americans. Just like African Americans, Native Americans suffered brutalization from the police and some thought that protection was therefore needed. The Indian Civil Rights Movement was called henceforth "Red Power" which is similar to the "Black Power" of the Black Panthers.

The most emblematic action of the AIM was the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee in South Dakota which lasted three months. Its method included Civil Disobedience just like the other Civil Rights movements and that led to mediatic spectacle as well.
