What was a result of the construction of the Suez Canal?

I would say there were two main consequences or results.

Explanation:

Firstly it opened a link between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean via the Red Sea. This meant that ships no longer needed to sail right round Africa.

Secondly it was built and owned by the French and British and consolidated their imperialist interests in that part of the world. This lasted until 1956 when Nasser nationalised the canal.

The ensuing debacle of the Suez crisis reflected the fact that these imperialist days of European powers were drawing to an end, and that the said countries could not come to terms with such a decline..

I would say the reduction of the time taken to reach, say, India from England and Europe.

Explanation:

Before the construction of the Suez Canal ships had to travel around Africa to reach the Indian Ocean. This was quite a long route and possibly dangerous as well.
The introduction of the Canal cut the time and the dangers.
