The defeat of President Carter.
Explanation:
The taking of the hostages and subsequent disastrous attempt at rescuing them severely damaged Carter's chances of re-election. There was also the rumour that the Iranians were working with Carter's opponents particularly the Reagan team, e.g. Oliver North and the Iran-Contragate scandal.
It is interesting to note that the hostages were released the day of Reagan's inauguration.
