The Committees of Correspondence were illegal governments set up in the Colonies to fight against British rule.

Explanation:

Leading up to the Revolutionary War, the Committees of Correspondence sprang up a few times to coordinate responses to British laws. For instance, after the Stamp Act was passed in 1765, the Committees worked together to resist the tax, send a letter to the British government protesting it, and encouraged people to resist the tax through intimidation and violence.

In 1772, the Committees began to form permanently in each colony to resist British control. Together they called the First Continental Congress, which set up a boycott of British goods and eventually led to a Congress in which the United States declare themselves separate from Britain.
