Explanation:

The earliest form of Shite religion in the Safavid empire which would become Iran was sufism. The Shite form of Islam venerates Ali the nephew of Mohammad. Shi'ism became the state religion of the Safavid Empire.

Sunni religion was outlawed in the Safavid empire. In the Ottoman Empire Shi'a religion was outlawed. The conflict between the Sunni Islamic religion and The Shite Islamic religion continues today.
