His stated goal was to keep the U.S. out of the war.


Wilson was mid-term when the war in Europe broke out in 1914. Wilson stated at the time that the U.S. had no interest in European squabbles. He repeated that as part of his re-election campaign in 1916, however, he knew that the entry of the U.S. into the war was a matter of when and not if.
