What were some goals of Fidel Castro, with Cuba, concerning the US?

Castro was trying to help ordinary Cubans who were suffering under the prior regime.

I'm glad this question appeared when it did - an article in the Canadian Huffington Post website was just posted today and will do a fine job of helping to answer the question:

We have to remember that no one and nothing operates in a vacuum - and this includes Castro and his allies when they made their way to Cuba to start the revolution.

Pre-Fidel Castro, Cuba was ruled by an American-backed dictator named Fulgencio Batista (and just a bit on him before we move on - Batista overthrew the elected government twice and was a well known strongman with his own private army. He was well like by US politicians because he was friendly to US corporate interests and was also well liked by the mafia - allowing them to set up and run casinos and hotels, so long as Batista was given a percentage of the take.)

Batista's rule had left the country in ruins - while Havana (the capital city) became a playground for rich Americans, including gambling, prostitution, and drug use, the rest of the country had inadequate housing, little or no health care, poor education, and more. Batista's regime used torture and public executions to keep the populace in line.

And so Castro wanted to free his country from that system and in large part managed to do so - the education system is free and excellent as is the medical system. In other ways he was a dictator and strongman in the same way Batista was.
