What would cause the rotation of the earth to stop?

Explanation:

The earth is an object in motion and is in a vacuum. Newton's first law of motion states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless an outside force influences it.

At some point in the very distant future our sun will expand into a red giant at which time it may envelope the earth. Only then, of course, will it stop rotating.
