When the seven southern states seceded from the Union, the state of South Carolina demanded that the U.S. Army abandon their position at Fort Sumter. This led to three days of bombardment from the Confederate troops and the eventual abandonment of the the coastal stronghold.
Strangely enough despite nearly three days of engagement, there were no deaths from actual gunfire. However, two Union soldiers died during the surrender ceremonies.
