Most fossils are persevered in sedimentary rocks.

Explanation:

Sedimentary rocks are formed by the erosion of water or sand. The remains of once living things are covered and buried under the sediments. Once buried the remains are protected from bacteria, decomposers, and animals that would eat the remains.

Metamorphic rocks are changed by heat and pressure. The remains of living things ( fossils) in those rocks would also be changed by the heat and pressure making them for the most part unrecognizable. However the remains have been changed into gas, oil and coal by the metamorphic pressures. Some fossils have been found in coal deposits (Even what some purport to be human carbon skulls)

Igneous rocks are formed by heat and fire. Any remains that were in the rocks would be melted and destroyed. However some human like footprints have been found preserved in volcanic ash.

Despite a few exceptions most fossils are found preserved in sedimentary rock strata
