The Viet people (probably) first settled in the Red River Delta of what is now North Vietnam and Southern China.

Explanation:

It is generally believed that the Viet (or Kinh) people migrated from Indonesia via the Malay Peninsula through what is now Thailand and Laos to the agriculturally fertile plains of the Red River Delta.
