Philadelphia, PA - in 1792
Explanation:
The Mint was first located in the same city where the USA had its capital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It came into being with the Coinage Act of 1792.
Branch mints opened in subsequent years, requiring "mint marks" to be placed on coins. For instance, there is a mint in Denver, Colorado and on every coin it produces, there is a "D" marked onto it.
Currently there are four branch mints operating:
- Philadelphia
- San Francisco
- Denver
- West Point
And Fort Knox continues to be a storage area for the USA's and other nations' bullion gold and silver reserves.
The Mint system is now part of the Treasury Department.
