The countries in Eastern Europe under Soviet control.

Explanation:

From north to south these countries were Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. The term could also be applied to Albania under the autocratic rule of Enver Hoxha. Yugoslavia, despite being communist under Tito was independent of the Soviet Union and took a neutral position in international affairs. It is generally regarded as not being behind the Iron Curtain.
