The USA has traditionally supported Israel. This was the position from the formation of Israel until after the Yom Kippur war in 1973.

Such support stems from the fact that Arab states such as Egypt and Syria were supported by the Soviet Union and because of the huge and very powerful Jewish lobby in the USA.

After Yom Kippur the situation changed when the Americans replaced the Soviets in Egypt through the Camp David agreements.
