France governed this area of the world as part of the French Empire. This was known as French Indo China and consisted of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Even before the start of World War 2 nationalist movements were fighting the French for their independence. During the war the Japanese occupied Vietnam. When the war ended the French assumed they would resume their control. However war ensued and the French were finally defeated at Dien Bien Phu. In 1954 Vietnam was partitioned into North and South.
