There are a lot of scientists that are claimed to have said this rule first, but I'd say that James Prescott Joule that demonstrated the law of conservation of energy using heat in the year #1843#.

He is also credited today for saying the law, but the debate goes back to around #550 \ "BC"#, where ancient philosophers also thought about this law/theory.
