After the battle of Saratoga in New York the French came into the war on the side of the America Colonies.

The French were crucial in the final victory at York Town. The French fleet prevented the British from reinforcing their army at Yorktown. The French regulars prevented the British from attacking out from Yorktown and breaking the siege. Then the French Fleet also prevented the British from evacuating Yorktown in the same way the British evacuated their army from Boston when besieged.

Without the French support the war of independence would not have ended at Yorktown.
