Who was the "Father of Texas"?

1 Answer

Stephen F. Austin (1793-1836)

Explanation:

He was the one that lead the incursion into Mexico, establishing the first "American colony" in Mexico (obviously Texas). His father (Moses Austin) was the one that took the "baby steps" in order to first allow the construction of a colony in Mexico (he asked, and he was allowed 300 American families into Mexican territory, he died before he could inquire, so Stephen then went and asked).http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txbastro/colony.htm

After that, had pretty shaky relations with the Mexicans (especially with Santa Anna, the dictator), and was imprisoned once for attempting insurrection (circa 1830). After they did win the Texan war for independence (at San Jacinto), he went towards the Americans to implore them for annexation, they were reluctant, and so he returned to Texas (to run for President), but lost to Sam Houston, and died in 1836 as Secretary of State.

P.S. rather conspicuous, but the city of Austin is named after him.
