John Winthrop

Explanation:

When the Puritans landed in what is now Charlestown, Winthrop was their leader. Shortly afterward a man named Braxton claimed to have potable water on the peninsula across the river in what is now Boston. The troupe moved there.

In 1636 there was an insurrection, of sorts, when some prominent men demanded to see the charter for the Mass Bay Colony. Their reason was they suspected the motivations of Winthrop. They discovered that the charter provided for a democratic process of leadership which Winthrop to that point had denied them.

A small group split off and moved across the river to found what is today Cambridge and at the same time, Harvard College. They ceased to called themselves Puritans preferring the title of Congregationalists.
