Whom did American troops attack at the village of My Lai?

They attacked Vietnamese civilians.

Explanation:

The attack took place early in 1968. My Lai had wrongly been identified as a Vietcong HQ in an area known as Pinkville which was sympathetic to the communists.

When the Americans landed they me no resistance. However under pressure to "get results" they then massacred between 400-500 innocent men women and children.

Only one American soldier was injured. He deliberately shot himself in the foot to avoid taking part.
