Why are sedimentary rocks important?

Because sedimentary rocks tend to be more porous than igneous or metamorphic rocks, they are more likely to contain water, oil and natural gas.


Sedimentary rocks form from the lithification (think "rockification") of separate sediments usually through the addition of some type of natural cementing agent. There are spaces between these sediments which can hold water and petroleum hydrocarbons such as oil and natural gas.
