Why are there no snakes in New Zealand?

There are sea snakes in New Zealand (or at least off the coasts of Kiwi).
Explanation:
But the reason there are no land snakes in Kiwi is probably because the geological climate has undergone several periods of glaciation, making the islands too cold for cold-blooded land snakes. I am not aware of fossil evidence for snakes in either the North or South Islands.
