# Why can the median of a data set differ from the mean?

Oct 30, 2015

Look at a simple example ...

#### Explanation:

Data = {1, 3. 95}

median = 3

mean $= \frac{1 + 3 + 95}{3} = 33$

Unless the data is SYMMETRIC , expect the mean and median to always be different.

Symmetric data: {1, 3, 5}

median = mean = 3

hope that helped
