Our constitution is based on the English Magna Carta.

Explanation:

The magna carta was the basis of English law in the 18th Century and had been for hundreds of years. The writers of the Constitution were educated men who were well aware of this. But they were also well-versed, many of them, in more ancient principles spelled out by ancient Greek and Roman philosophers. Plato's "Republic," and Aristotle's political theories also played into its development.

But mostly, they wanted a representative government where the power was held by the people and not by the ruler and/or an elite class. The idea of kings and nobility were what drove the writers to find a better way of governing as their own experience showed that the English form of government did not work for them.
