Why did Eskimos travel in small groups?

The Inuit (the modern preferred name) people like many native Americans were semi-nomadic. They would follow game or fishing to survive. Small family groups do this better.

Explanation:

Small groups spread the the impact of humans over a wider area so the animals and fish have a faster recovery time. Groups of people might gather for Caribou hunting during the Caribou migration but disperse afterward to other places.

It was easy to over fish or hunt an area, smaller groups needed less to support them. Famines were common dispersion lessen there impact.
