Why did Japan seek an empire in Asia?

Japan wanted to be a world power after the humiliation of Admiral Perry's visit.

Explanation:

The European powers were forcing the Chinese into trade with them at gun point. The Americans did the same to the Japan. Japan like China discovered that they were not equipped to effectively resist. Unlike China they remained calm and co-operative and did not fight back. They plotted to beat the Europeans at there own game by becoming a modern industrial power.
