Why did Mao launch the Cultural Revolution?

To regain control of the direction of communism in China.

Explanation:

In the early 1960's there were tentative attempts at reforms within China. Mao was worried that this would be revisionist returning China to a pre-communist state.

The Cultural Revolution launched through his Little Red Book and the Red Guards attacked anything which was labelled bourgeois or revisionist so doing Mao and his supporters hoped to sustain revolutionary fervour in China.
