Why did Native Americans wave the American flag when the militia attacked at the Sand Creek Massacre?

Explanation:
The Americans didn't want war. In fact, the Americans had tried to negotiate peace and were given the flag to wave in times of attack stating they would want peace.
However, General Chivington ignored this and proceeded to attack anyway, with his army brutally murdering the sand creek tribe.
