Russia wanted to expand southward into the large but sparsely populated areas between it and the Ottoman Empire and British India. The were looking for a warm water Port in particular.

Explanation:

Russia was relatively successful in the Central Asia where large parts of it came under Russian control. They also made big gains around the Black Sea threatening the Ottoman Empire. The Crimean War was a British response.
