In 1970 Nixon was talking about de-escalating American involvement in Vietnam. However his extension of the war into Cambodia, both on the ground and in a devastating illegal and secret bombing campaign enraged many Americans where opposition to the war was already significant. The demonstration at Kent State University was an example of this. (They were actually demonstrating against Nixon's announcement of an invasion). It cost 4 of them their lives.
