After WWII, the USA and the Soviet Union had opposite ideologies(capitalism and communism) and opposite economic system. They endeavored to have as many allies as possible and accumulated the greatest amount of arms as possible. They both had nuclear weapon and thus direct military confrontation would have led to the end of the world.
