Why did the Germans attack the Allies at the Battle of the Bulge?

It was a last desperate attempt by Hitler to achieve victory in the West.

Explanation:

The plan was to breakthrough the allied lines and strike towards Antwerp. Recapturing the port would mean that the allies would lose a critically important port used to supply their troops. The logistics of such supplies had proved very difficult after D Day.

After initial successes and fierce fighting the advance was checked and driven back. It was the last German offensive in the West.
