Why did the Turkish Muslims reject the reforms made by Ataturk?

Mustafa Kamal Ataturk attempted to replace the existing Islamic state with a secular state.

Explanation:

Ataturk's reforms included:

  • introduction of Western legal codes;
  • encouragement of the use of Western-style dress;
  • use of the (basically) Christian calendar;
  • use of the Latin alphabet in place of Arabic script;
  • the end of of all state-supported Islamic institutions.
