The attack on Pearl Harbour and Hitler's subsequent declaration of war.

Explanation:

Amid rising tension, the Japanese launched an attack of the American naval base at Pearl Harbour hoping to knock out the American fleet in the Pacific and force the USA to sue for peace with Japan protected by a ring of countries under their control; and with the raw materials they desperately needed.

In response to the attack the USA declared war on Japan. Unfortunately for the Japanese the American aircraft carrier force was at sea and survived intact. Subsequent naval engagements showed that naval warfare was no longer based on battleships but on carriers.

Within a few days Hitler declared war on the USA in support of his Axis ally Japan.
