Why did the United States remove Panama's Manuel Noriega from power?

He knew too much.

Explanation:

Noriega was an important ally for the USA in protecting US interests in Central and South America. Allegedly he was given crucial information by the CIA which allowed cocaine smuggling to by-pass FBI patrols.

He was also given sensitive information bu the CIA on critics such as Senator Edward Kennedy which he used to blackmail them. In return the US could use Panama for important anti-insurgency operations whilst Noriega was allowed to control cocaine trafficking. When he became an embarrassment and threat to the USA which outbalanced his usefulness he was removed.
