They were scared of being accused of being communists and therefore traitors.

During McCarthyism and the witch hunt, a real wave of hysteria and paranoia swept through America. People were frightened by the military might that the Soviet Union had acquired with the atomic bomb.

McCarthy accused many people of being communists in the army and in the entertainment industry. The Communist Party was relatively weak( it had around 75,000 members) neverthelesss it was enough to trigger such irrational fears.
