Why is air pressure generally lower over equatorial regions than over polar regions?

It's not.

Explanation:

Air pressure is highest at the equator, and much lower at the poles. Guy-Lussac's Law states that pressure is proportional to temperature at constant volume.

Often people think that low pressure areas are warmer, however this is only the case where volume is not constant.
