Life is dependent on water ( at least life as it is presently known and understood) NASA is looking for water as evidence for possible life on Mars.

Explanation:

NASA is looking for evidence for life in the solar system. The present of water on Mars would be indirect evidence that life was possible on the planet Mars.

All known living things are dependent on water. The present of water would be an indication that life is, or was possible on the planet Mars.

NASA is looking for water on the planet Mars as evidence for life on the planet.

Water on Mars can also be used by future manned missions and colonies.

Explanation:

Another reason water is important to search for is that if there is ever a manned mission to Mars, the presence of easily available water would be a huge boon - it could reduce the need to transport so much water from Earth.

In fact, if water were available in an easily usable form, a colony on Mars could use it not only to drink but also use it to grow food, as a propellant, etc.
