Yes, you correctly pointed out a big thing,but what was the problem that discovery of hypothalamus occurred after pituitary was. As a result, initially it was considered as a master gland but discovery of hypothalamus did outway this concept showing its dependence on hypothalamus for releasing factors. But as the name was given in age old time,it is kept such just like the case of unit membrane.
