Digestion literally means “ Breakdown”. It’s one of the most vital processes of life because it breakdown complex substances of food into simpler one so that they can be used by our body in order to get energy.

Explanation:

All humans and animals must have supply of water, oxygen, simple sugars, amino acids and many other organic and inorganic substances.

These substances except water and oxygen are rare in the natural environment and are not directly available to the organisms.

However In Nature, these substances are present in the form of proteins, starches, fats, vitamins and minerals.

As such these molecules are of no use unless they are broken down or digested into simple molecules such as amino acids, sugars and fatty acids so that they may pass through cell membrane and be used by the body.
