The United States Department of Homeland Security was established in response to the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.

Explanation:

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is a cabinet department of the United States federal government.

It has responsibility for public security.

The mission of DHS involves: anti-terrorism, border security, immigration and customs, cyber security, and disaster prevention and management.

It was created in response to the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. After the 9-11 attacks it was determined many of the organizations within the federal and local governments were not working together to share information which could have potentially stopped the 9-11 attacks.

The DHS was formed to be the over-arching organization to pull these disparate organizations together so they could share information and thereby better protect the United States from internal and external threats against the homeland.
