They had combined characteristics of the New England and southern colonies.

Farmers could grow large amounts of staple crops, crops that were always needed, due to a good climate and rich land. The staple crops included wheat, barley, and oats.
Trade was also an important part of the middle colonies' economy. Merchants in Philadelphia and New York City exported colonial goods to markets in Britain and the West Indies.
