Why were U.S. troops sent to Russia in 1918?

They were sent to prevent Bolsheviks from gaining power in Russia.

Explanation:

Following the Bolshevik Revolution, France, Great Britain, the USA and even Japan sent troops to Russia during the civil war that tore the country apart in a coalized effort to prevent communism from reaching power.

it was ironical that the USA came to help the Tsarist regime since its fall had been perveived as positive in America. It was also paradoxical for Japan to help Whites(the side that backed up the Tsarist regime) since they had fought in a mutual war in 1905. France and Britain sent troops notably to Crimea( the last pro-Tsar stronghold) since they were allied in what was the Triple Entente. American and Japanese troops were sent to Vladivostok in Eastern SIberia.
