This is a telescope that uses lenses and their ability to bend (refract) lighr beams to observe and magnify distant objects.

Explanation:

A refractor telescope is an optical device normally formed by two lenses and used to observe objects ad very large distances (basically ay #oo#). One of the simplest and basic layouts is:

As you can see the system forms a virtual image (formed by extensions of real rays, in violet in figure) that is focussed by our retina.
The magnification (angular) of this kind of telescope depends upon the focal lengths of the two lenses as:
