A decomposition reaction is the break down of a binary molecule into it's component parts.

The basic equation of a Decomposition Reaction is

#AB -> A + B#

An example of this type of reaction would be the decomposition of Potassium Chlorate.

#2KClO_3 -> 2KCl + 3O_2#

Another example of decomposition would be the breakdown of of Carbonic Acid.

#H_2CO_3 -> H_2O + CO_2#

A third example is the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen.

#2"H"_2"O" → 2"H"_2 + "O"_2#
