Solids do have spaces between the atoms. Some of them have lots of space between the atoms.
Think of it this way. If you fill a jar with marbles, the jar seems very full of stuff, so full that no more marbles can fit. Yet, there is room between the marbles. If I were to pour water into the jar, you would see how much space there was as we could measure the amount of water that was added. A solid is not much different. Atoms are packed together and seem to be very close, yet there is space between the atoms and we can measure that amount of space.
Different types of solids have atoms that pack together differently and therefore have different amounts of space between the atoms, but they all have spaces.
