Matter is composed of atoms. Every atom is composed of a nucleus made up of protons with a positive charge, and neutrons with a charge of 0. That nucleus has an overall positive charge, and is surrounded by electrons with a negative charge contained in shells as theorized, and later, proven, by Niels Bohr.

Each atom contains a different number of electrons, and that number is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom. The element boron contains a nucleus of 5 protons and 6 neutrons.
