The idea is to place your object (the thing you want to observe) between the focus and the lens.

As you can see from the picture the object "sends" rays through the lens (rays 1 and 2);
Ray 1 passes through the lens and through the focus of your lens;
Ray 2 passes through the center of the lens without changes in its direction.
The fact is that your eye "sees" the rays as coming from the enlarged (and VIRTUAL) image.
