The potential energy is an energy not already used. If the body that owns the potential energy starts to move, there is a degrowth of it and a growth of kinetic energy.

E.G.:

If I take an object an I put it at the height #h# I give it a potential energy #U=mgh# , where #g# is the acceleration of gravity. Its energy is only potential because it is stationary. If I open my hand and i leave it to fall, its velocity growths, its kinetic energy from zero growths with the low #K=1/2mv^2#.

When the object is near to the floor, its potential energy is near to zero and its kinetic energy is near to the starting potential energy:

#U=K#, so: #mgh=1/2mv^2#.
