Electron configuration is the arrangement of electrons in a given atom.

The electrons are placed in the available shells according to the following rules:

  • electrons enter and fill the first shell, then the second etc.
  • Each shell can hold a maximum number of electrons:
*the first shell has a maximum of 2 electrons
  • the second shell has a maximum of 8
*the third shell has a maximum of 18, however for the atoms of the
first 20 elements the maximum is 8
